OLOL’s Parent Homecoming

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School kicked off the 2023-24 school year with a fantastic new event for all OLOL parents and staff – Parent Homecoming! On September 8, the school gym was decorated as a replica of a high school homecoming dance, complete with a photo area, music, lights, drinks and snacks. The topper of the evening was a Homecoming Court, complete with the crowning of a King and Queen. This was the first year of the Parent Homecoming, and it was a resounding success with approximately 80 in attendance.

This event was created to help build a strong parent community at the start of the school year by bringing parents together without the need to fundraise. It allowed returning parents to reconnect after a busy summer, as well as afforded new parents the opportunity to meet others and to become fully immersed in OLOL’s amazing culture. The event has been dubbed a “friendraiser,” as its goal is to welcome all parents back into the strong, committed and fun culture of the school and to build relationships that can last a lifetime.

Given the positive reaction to the 2023 Parent Homecoming, it has been decided that this will be an annual OLOL event for all parents to enjoy. The date is still to be decided for 2024, but it will most likely take place at the beginning of September. Check your calendars next summer and be sure to line up your “date” for the dance!

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School church

Our Lady of Guadalupe

How wonderful during the month of December we have two feast days for the Virgin Mother. On Friday, December 8 we gathered for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is unique in all humanity for being born without sin, she is held up by the Church as a model for all humanity in Her holiness and Her purity in her willingness to accept the plan of God for her.

During our school mass on Wednesday, December 13, we gathered for the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is officially on December 12.

In our Spanish classes, the students learn about the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego. Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego and asked him to build a shrine for those who believe. While Juan’s story was doubted of his encounter, he gathered flowers under the direction of Our Lady and when presented to the bishop, the Virgin Mary’s image appeared on his Tilma.

As we prepared for today’s mass, the students processed through the school hallways being led by Juan Diego, who collected flowers from each classroom on his Tilma. Every student carried a candle and presented to Our Lady in church. The lit candle signifies the wish they want to make to Our Lady.

Today’s mass for the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe was a combination of English and Spanish speaking with our middle school students leading our students and parishioners with the responses in Spanish. A wonderful opportunity for students to share what they have learned and for Fr. James Baraniak, O.Praem to utilize his Spanish speaking skills, too.

The Gift of Self

It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. During this season of Advent and throughout the year, there are many opportunities to share your time and talents.

In our parish, we are asking for ministers to join us in the “Vineyard of the Lord.”  During the weekends in Advent, there are two stations set up in the church narthex where you can sign up to serve on liturgical ministries (indicating your Mass of preference). Fr. James Baraniak, O.Praem will train you in these ministries, and then happily commission you in your new role.

Ministries to Consider:

  • Minister of Hospitality (usher) – adult or post-Communion youth
  • Cross Bearer – adult or middle / high school youth
  • Acolyte (Mass server) – adult or post-Communion youth
  • Minister of the Word (Lector) – adult or post-Communion youth
  • Gift Bearer – adult or post-Communion youth
  • Eucharistic Minister – adult / post-Confirmation
  • Music Ministry (instrumentalist, singer, cantor) – adult or post-Communion youth
  • Ministry Scheduling Team Member  – adult

During Advent, our school service project is to support the Sleep In Heavenly Peace with donations. Please bring the donated items to your child’s classroom. If your schedule allows, there is an opportunity for you and your family to build beds on December 30.

Thank you to our our middle school students, led by Mrs. Lewis, Ms. Strand and the middle school teachers who accept the annual task of replacing missalettes in our church and St. Michael Chapel as we began the new liturgical year. Thank you for answering the “Call” in loving service to others.

Advent calendar

Advent

This last week of November is the end of the liturgical year. Sunday, December 3 is the beginning of Advent, which is the shortest Advent that we can possibly have.

As we prepare for the birth of Jesus, we have several activities planned to prepare our hearts and minds for Christmas.

During the school day, the students will lead prayers for Advent in church.

  • Monday, December 4 at 10:00am
  • Monday, December 11 at 12:30pm
  • Monday, December 18 at 1:50pm

On Wednesday, December 6 at 6:30PM families are invited for Las Posadas. We begin in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and will walk through the local neighborhood as we reflect on Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a place (posada) for baby Jesus to be born.

As we prepare for the start of the new liturgical year with Advent on Sunday, December 3, it is a new beginning and an opportunity to grow more in holiness. Our school families have been provided an Advent calendar, where they will be reading a chapter from the gospel of Luke each day of Advent. There are 24 chapters. The Gospel of St. Luke is one of the most beautiful of the Christmas Story.

Our service project during Advent is to support the Sleep In Heavenly Peace with donations. If your schedule allows, there is an opportunity for you and your family to build beds on December 30.

As we navigate through the Advent season, we have many opportunities to prepare with the sacrament of reconciliation. The students will be provided the opportunity during the school days. The opportunity for reconciliation at Our Lady of Lourdes has been expanded during Advent, please see our newsletter for the various dates/times.

While in attendance at mass during Advent, be sure to listen (and sing along) to the songs that were shared during ‘Fr. Jim Jams’.
