3D in Flight

The end of the school year is fast approaching and our elective classes are coming to an end. A trimester 3 elective offering was Computer Science with Mrs. Sharon Johnson. Our most recent activities in this elective class was the introduction of 3D printing using 3D pens. The first project was designed to help students learn how to use the 3D pen by writing their name in cursive. Once complete, they let if cool/harden and removed their name from the design surface. Then, they created a framework to allow for their name to be displayed upright on the desk as their 3D project.

This week, the students started with a ‘offline’ project to create a paper airplane. For those who had never created a paper airplane, they learned about the importance of folds and angles. If the task of a paper airplane was new to them, we provided some examples for them to follow. Once their paper airplane was created, each edge and angle of the airplace was traced using the 3D pen filament. The ultimate challenge was for the students to create the airplane framework using the 3D pen and remove the ‘paper’ from the airplane. Will their framework be strong to retain its design without the paper? This learning opportunity emphasized the importance of strong design and welds using the 3D pen.

These pens were recently purchased for our school with a donation from the Our Lady of Lourdes Packer Party. Thank you to everyone who supports this event! Proceeds from this event support technology at Our Lady of Lourdes and various organizations within our community.
